More Than a Building: How the Centre for Digital Business and e-Commerce Skills is Creating New Opportunities for Entrepreneurs in Edo State

Some milestones are measured by the buildings we commission.

Others are measured by the lives they transform, the businesses they strengthen, and the opportunities they unlock for generations to come.

The launch of the Centre for Digital Business and e-Commerce Skills represents both.

Standing in that room during the official launch, I found myself reflecting on how an idea that once existed only in conversations, planning meetings, and shared ambitions has now become a physical reality one that will equip thousands of entrepreneurs, young people, MSMEs, and aspiring digital business owners with the skills they need to compete in an increasingly digital world.

For me, this was more than another project launch.

It was the beginning of a new chapter in the story of digital economic transformation in Edo State.

Why This Centre Matters

We are living in an era where the internet has fundamentally changed the way businesses operate.

Customers no longer shop only within their neighborhoods.

Businesses no longer compete only with the next store on the street.

Today’s marketplace is digital.

Consumers discover products through search engines, social media platforms, online marketplaces, and mobile applications. Businesses that understand how to position themselves online have access to customers far beyond their immediate environment.

Yet, despite this enormous opportunity, many entrepreneurs still struggle to participate effectively in the digital economy.

Not because they lack quality products and not because they lack passion.

Because they lack access to the practical knowledge, digital tools, and structured support required to thrive online.

Over the years, I have interacted with countless entrepreneurs, artisans, business owners, and MSMEs across different sectors.

Many produce exceptional products.

Many provide remarkable services.

Many possess the resilience and determination every successful entrepreneur needs.

However, one recurring challenge continues to surface.

They often do not know how to:

  • Build an online business presence.
  • Sell products through digital marketplaces.
  • Reach customers beyond their local communities.
  • Market effectively using digital platforms.
  • Process online payments securely.
  • Build customer trust online.
  • Leverage technology to scale sustainably.

As a result, many businesses remain confined to local markets while opportunities worth millions continue to exist beyond their reach.

This is exactly the gap the Centre for Digital Business and e-Commerce Skills was created to address.

A Partnership Built Around Shared Purpose

Transformational initiatives rarely happen in isolation.

They happen when institutions come together around a common vision.

The Centre for Digital Business and e-Commerce Skills is a powerful example of what collaboration can achieve.

This initiative was made possible through the partnership between the Edo State Skills Development Agency (EDOJOBS), through EdoInnovates, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH SEDIN Programme’s Sustainable e-Commerce for Growth (SE4G) Initiative, Genius Hub Limited, and other committed partners who believe in the power of skills development to transform economies.

Each partner brought unique expertise, resources, and commitment to a shared mission:

To equip entrepreneurs and businesses with practical digital skills that create sustainable economic opportunities.

This collaboration demonstrates what becomes possible when government institutions, development organizations, private sector leaders, and innovation ecosystem stakeholders move beyond individual goals and work collectively toward inclusive economic growth.

Digital Skills Are No Longer Optional

One of the biggest misconceptions many entrepreneurs still hold is that digital transformation is reserved for technology companies.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Whether you own a fashion business, operate a restaurant, manufacture products, provide professional services, manage a farm, or run a retail store, digital capability is increasingly becoming a business necessity rather than a competitive advantage.

Customers expect businesses to be visible online.

They expect responsive communication.

They expect digital payment options.

They expect convenience.

Businesses that fail to adapt risk becoming invisible in an economy that is increasingly driven by digital interactions.

The Centre was established to help bridge this divide.

Rather than offering only theoretical knowledge, it focuses on practical, hands-on learning that empowers entrepreneurs to confidently navigate today’s digital business landscape.

Sharing Practical Strategies for MSMEs

During the launch, I also had the privilege of speaking on e-commerce and the opportunities it presents for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Our conversation centered on practical strategies that businesses can implement immediately to transition from traditional methods of selling to digital marketplaces.

The goal was not simply to inspire.

It was to equip.

Because knowledge creates value only when it is translated into action.

Entrepreneurs need practical guidance they can apply immediately to improve customer acquisition, increase visibility, expand market reach, and build sustainable businesses.

That is the kind of transformation this Centre seeks to deliver.

Building an Inclusive Digital Economy

Perhaps the most encouraging part of the launch was witnessing such a diverse group of stakeholders united by one vision.

Government leaders.

Development partners.

Academic institutions.

Innovation ecosystem players.

Private sector organizations.

Entrepreneurs.

Youth leaders.

Every person present represented a different piece of the larger puzzle.

Together, we are contributing to the development of a more inclusive digital economy—one where opportunities are not determined by geography, background, or access, but by skills, innovation, and the willingness to learn.

When entrepreneurs are equipped with digital business skills, the ripple effects extend far beyond individual success.

Businesses become more competitive.

Communities become more economically resilient.

Employment opportunities increase.

Innovation accelerates.

Local products gain access to national and international markets.

Entire economies become stronger.

That is the real impact of digital transformation.

More Than Training- Creating Sustainable Economic Growth

At Genius Hub Limited, we believe that skills remain one of the greatest catalysts for economic development.

This belief continues to shape our work across technical and vocational education, digital transformation, entrepreneurship development, workforce readiness, innovation, and human capital development.

The launch of this Centre aligns perfectly with that mission.

It is not simply about teaching people how to use digital tools.

It is about helping people create wealth responsibly.

It is about enabling businesses to scale sustainably.

It is about preparing young people for the future of work.

It is about ensuring that entrepreneurs can compete confidently in an increasingly connected global economy.

Ultimately, it is about creating opportunities that improve livelihoods and strengthen communities.

This Is Only the Beginning

Every meaningful journey begins with a single step.

The launch of the Centre for Digital Business and e-Commerce Skills is not the destination.

It is the foundation upon which countless success stories will be built.

In the coming months and years, I look forward to seeing entrepreneurs launch digital businesses, expand into new markets, create employment, adopt innovative technologies, and build enterprises that contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic growth.

Those future success stories will be the true measure of this Centre’s impact.

Gratitude

My sincere appreciation goes to the Edo State Skills Development Agency (EDOJOBS), EdoInnovates, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH SEDIN Programme, the Sustainable e-Commerce for Growth (SE4G) Initiative, our partners, stakeholders, and every individual whose commitment and collaboration made this Centre a reality.

Thank you for believing in the power of partnerships.

Thank you for investing in people.

Thank you for investing in the future.

The future of business is undoubtedly digital.

I am proud that together, we are creating opportunities that will empower more entrepreneurs, strengthen more businesses, and build a more prosperous, inclusive, and digitally enabled economy for Edo State and beyond.

And this is only the beginning.
